Fashion week always makes me Nostalgic..

contact sheet

When I first met Kevyn Aucoin in 1992,  he had already been doing the makeup for NY fashion week for many years. He had been working with Geoffrey Beene, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, Todd Oldham, to name a few. His work had been featured regularly in Vogue , Harpers Bazaar and Allure magazine. At the time, I was a nieve boy from Pittsburgh, just getting my bearings in New York.  The world of high fashion never existed for me, except for my love of Calvin Klein jeans and Polo shirts, which I often shoplifted in my earlier years from Kaufmans dept. store in Pittsburgh, in order to fit in with the other kids.  I didnt comprehend his status in the fashion community at the time, but later realized his power when I saw the fashion editors and top designers jostle for his time.

I’ll never forget my first glimpse into that world when he asked me to go with him to Donna Karans for a fitting, in which he would discuss with her the look for the upcoming show. It was incredible to watch Kevyn and Donna talk about the collection, watch her dress the models,  and then have him come up with the makeup for the show. They spoke the same language and understood each others subtle references. I sat back and watched, not really getting it.

As fashion week approached, Kevyn suggested that I come along to the shows and take photos of his work as well as all the action backstage. I was nervous, of course, not knowing any of the players as he had, but was assured by him that it would be fine. That is the power he had. All the designers and models respected him so much that they let me have access to their world.

It was the height of the supermodel era and the girls were as big as the designers themselves. I was intimidated by the entire scene, but being with Kevyn I felt very safe. He was a star as well, and he was treated as such. All the girls clamored for him to do their makeup. I had a front row seat in the pandemonium of it all to watch Kevyn interact with each girl. It was there, each season, that I got to know Linda, Christy, Naomi, Cindy, Kate, Amber, Shalom, Carla, Nadja, Beverly, Nikki, Yasmeen, Chandra and many others. Each treated me with the same respect that they did Kevyn.

I’ll never forget how funny Linda. She would tell us a story and look at me on the side and wink..like we had a private joke. She also took extra care in the craziness of it all to give me really great shots.. Here was the girl who wouldnt get out of bed for 10,000 a day,, and she was my private muse.  Amazing really how kind and sweet, dispelling all the rumors that were out there in print.

The same with Naomi. Every season she remembered my name and went out of her way to ask how I was doing. It was  hard to believe considering the thousands of people she had come in contact with.

Amber became a really good friend. Carla Bruni had the funniest sense of humor and would keep the younger girls in line. Christy was always rock solid, supportive and super sweet.

My experience as an outsider coming into their world couldn’t have been a more fulfilling one. I got to see the insanity of their world, but also the real side of women who carried themselves under such pressure with grace.  It is no wonder that they were called supermodels.

Vapour, at any age

August 23rd, 2009

The other nite my mom invited some of her friends over to the house to come and see Vapour.I love moms enthusiasm and promotion efforts! Shes been telling the nurses at the hospital, where she goes for dialysis, that if they watch me, I’ll come and visit. So funny.

Her friends,Weezie, Norberta and Carol had all watched me on Shop over the past weekend. Carol had been the only successful one getting through the phone lines to order the day of the show. Shop NBC had some issues with customer service that day, so I told mom to invite her friends over for a home demonstraton.
I felt a bit like the Avon lady, but I thought it would also be fun and I would be able to get some great feedback from their perspective.

My mom and dad had been friends with Weezie and Blues for over 50  years. My dad actually knew Blues longer, having gone to grade school with him in the same mill town  of Hazelwood, just 5 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Mom and Dad actually took them to West Virginia so that they could get married. They were friends  for life. When mom and dad got married and started having kids, Blues and Weezie  moved to the same town of Dravosburg.
We all grew up together.
Weezie and Blues had 3 boys, Jimmie, Greg and Jeff. Since me and my two sisters were the same age, we all hang out together. Even though us kids have lost touch over the years, mom and dad remained friends for all these years. . Blues died a few years ago from lung cancer that he got from asbestos he breathed in over the years from lathing. My father misses his friendship.
Its been an inspiration to see how Weezie has been able to carry on, even though she lost her husband of 40 years.
What was really helpful for me was to see how Vapour performed for women of all ages. My mom , who is 75,has been using the product now for about a week and keeps saying how amazed she is as to how easy and quick it is. I have given my mom many products over the years , but this seems to be the biggest hit.
She goes to dialysis every other day and gets up at 5:30 on those days. What used to take her 10 minutes.. now literally takes her under 5 minutes to put her face on.. Atmosphere Foundation in Tan , ,she likes having a bit of color, Aura in Spark, and then Siren Lipstick in Desire.
The other ladies.. especially Weezie loved how the products made their skin look. They all kept commenting on how their skin glowed, and how easy it was. It made me very happy to hear their comments and also made for a very memorable week!

Intro

August 17th, 2009

(This is a slightly modified version of my intro letter to Vapour Organic Beauty)

I’ve been very fortunate in my career to have worked with some of the most innovative visionaries in the beauty industry.

First nite we met

First nite we met

When I moved to New York back in the late 80s a good friend of mine from Pittsburgh, Robert Montgomery, said that I needed to meet a friend of his who was a really talented makeup artist.  I took it with a grain of salt and said that I would look him up but never did. It was a few years later upon that friend’s visit that my life would change in a New York minute.

He introduced me to Kevyn Aucoin at a downtown restaurant and we hit it off instantly. I had never met someone so open and honest. We started seeing each other immediately. The next week he had invited me to meet Liza Minnelli as she was recording a single called “The Day After That.” From Kiss of the Spider Woman.  It was the first of many of his celebrity clients that I would meet in the years ahead. I was struck by their fondness for him. Aside from his incredible talent, what I was most impressed with most was his humility. I really connected with him because I saw that he was just a small town boy in the big city, just like me. That attitude never changed in the 10 years that he grew to be one of the celebrated and beloved makeup artist of our time.

He was my biggest mentor in life. I learned so many things from him throughout the years that I worked side-by-side developing products for him and other big cosmetic companies.  I learned to see beauty through his eyes the way he did, in everyone.  I learned that it’s not worth doing something unless you’re going to give it your all. I learned that talent really is not so much about the technique but more about the passion. I learned that makeup does not mask an ugly heart. I learned that beauty does really come from within, but sometimes we need a jumpstart from someone who believes in us first. I learned the true meaning of unconditional love.

I was very fortunate to learn his coveted makeup techniques, work on his best selling beauty books and also run his cosmetics company, Kevyn Aucoin Beauty, even after his passing in 2002.  When I left the company to pursue other interests, I remembered years earlier when he was ill and would always say to me, “You will always be taken care of.” I believed what he told me and one day from out of the blue I received an email by Cristina Carlino, the founder of Philosophy, saying that she would love me to work with her to develop a full color line.

It was a huge opportunity and I was extremely grateful.

She reminded me so much of Kevyn in her ability to lead and to love. It was also her brilliant vision that drove me to create with such passion. When the company was sold and new management took over, we parted ways.
The short time that I spent with her gave me even more respect for her.
She taught me the true meaning of the word grace.

After Philosophy I started to consult in the industry and had the opportunity to work on many exciting products and brands. Consulting gave me a bigger vision of the industry and I really got to see everything.

After I was handed a sample one day in a meeting, my life would change again instantly.Someone I met had shown me a sample of the Vapour Foundation. I swatched it on my hand and was completely blown away by how it performed on the skin. I only knew that the

company was from New Mexico. That night I tracked them down on the Internet and found the small company the very next day. I called and spoke to the brilliant formulator, Kristine Kehely , and she told me it was organic. It made sense to me considering plant cells and skin cells are compatible, but I had never seen a product perform like this before. Everything I had seen previously in the organic space was sub par in its performance. We talked about the innovation and the years they had spent developing the formulas. I dropped everything I was working on to pursue a partnership with them, because I wanted to share this product with women everywhere. Many job opportunities had come along in that year, but I stood committed to developing the Vapour product line, because it was something I completely believed in.

The result is my experience in color cosmetic development combined with the innovative formulations of the Vapour team. In my opinion there is nothing on the market with the quality and performance of Vapour Organic Beauty. And I have seen it all! As someone who understands color and how it performs on the skin, the Vapour products are incredible. They apply evenly; blend in seamlessly and quickly, thereby creating a flawless and radiant second skin. The icing on the cake is that they are made with 100% chemical free, Certified Organic Botanicals, which provides nourishment and moisture to the skin. The Vapour products are the easiest color cosmetics I have ever used to get a very professional polished look in seconds.  No brushes or other products are needed, only your fingertips.

I am grateful that I can share this exceptional product line with women everywhere. It is the result of over 50 years combined experience in both prestige color cosmetics and organic formulations.

This has been a personal journey for me as well in remembering the words of my past mentors teaching in that I have truly followed my heart.

I hope that you will try Vapour Beauty and see for yourself what I’m so excited about.
